Reject McPherson bill

Editor:

Senator Bruce McPherson is pushing Senate Bill 1529, which would eliminate all the protections of our water supply handled by the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. These are protections that are not done by any other agency--nor could they be. Eliminating the district's oversight of the California-American Water Co. pumping and big development projects would leave our public water supply and the Carmel River at grave risk.

While this would benefit Cal-Am and developers, those harmed would be the general public, which is asked to ration more and risk fines, and the many species that depend on a healthy Carmel river system.

Under this bill, the public also would lose its current right to vote on water projects and their financing. If you don't want to lose these protections and your right to vote on big projects, oppose the McPherson bill SB 1529.
