Leave voters' rights intact

Editor:

Sen. Bruce McPherson's bill would take away Peninsula voters' rights over water, leaving a void. Do we want Cal-Am, owned by a European mega-corporation, to have unfettered control over our water? No. Do we want to hand over controls to big developers? No.

The voters never said they want to give up their rights--to vote on water projects, and to elect local officials focused solely on water.

Tony Lombardo's big developer, golf course clients are the big money behind McPherson. You can bet they're first in line for "new water." Average residents won't get a drop--and low income families can forget it.

(Don't believe the mayors' phony claim about affordable housing. Here's the truth: on former Fort Ord, the mayors had plenty of water, but refused to require affordable housing. And in their own cities, the mayors gave water to big projects--not to affordable housing. The mayors' claim is pure sham.)

We need local water management. The county can't do it--look at it's General plan mess and severe seawater intrusion and over pumping problems. We'd be at the mercy of Sacramento politicians who do the bidding of big developers.

Sen. McPherson should keep his hands off our right to vote.
